Artist: Jaime Scholnick

Exhibition title: Phallicies Series, Part 1

October 24, 2005 - January 13, 2006

Jamie Scholnick has exhibited nationally and internationally, notably in Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Phallicies Series, Part 1 addresses social and historical constructions of gender and ethnicity. Phallicies Series, Part 3 is a vertically ascending wall sculpture made up of rows of systematically assembled test tubes filled with light reactive fluids. The modular structure glows with translucent pigmented chemicals, which reference melanin and identity. Each test tube will be altered by prolonged environmental exposure throughout the duration of the exhibition. Adjacent and composed with layers of large-scale vinyl stickers is Ship Exploded View, which presents a huge multi level floor plan of a slave ship. The work re-contextualizes a disturbing, yet familiar historical image of dehumanization. This, juxtaposed against the wall sculpture, creates a confrontation of history, society, past and present.
