2003 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

Jim Paschal JIM PASCHAL - Paschal has earned distinction as both a coach and as athletic director at La Verne. During his tenure as athletic director (1991-2003), three of La Verne's teams went to capture national championships, including NCAA Division III titles in baseball (1995) and women's volleyball (2001) in addition to the Molten Division III Championship for men's volleyball in 1999, in addition to 18 SCIAC Championships. He was also instrumental in bringing aquatic sports to La Verne, as swimming and water polo began competition during the 1998-99 school year. A native of Alabama, Paschal ventured west and eventually earn his bachelor's degree from Eastern New Mexico (1962) and master's from Cal State Los Angeles (1970). Paschal began his association with La Verne in 1971. He took over as ULV's women's volleyball coach in 1974, beginning a 24-year run that was one of the most legendary in collegiate volleyball history. His 1981 squad won the AIAW national championship, which preceded the Leopards winning the first-ever NCAA Division III national championship in that sport the following year in 1982. In 1982, he was named Division III National Coach of the Year by the Collegiate Volleyball Coaches Association (CVCA). In addition, he was twice named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) West Region Coach of the Year, in 1988 and 1989. Paschal finished his coaching career with 13 SCIAC Championships. Under his tutelage, several ULV volleyball players earned All-America and All-SCIAC accolades.

Bob Dyer BOB DYER ('63) - Known affectionately as "The Voice of the Leos", Dyer has served as public address announcer for Leopard football since 1988, and as Leopard men's basketball PA announcer since 1991. He first made his mark at La Verne, however, on the hardwood. During his days as a La Verne College basketball player, Dyer, who never missed a game in his four seasons, was a District III NAIA Honorable Mention selection in 1963 and made the All-Golden State Tournament team in 1962. A product out of Coachella Valley High School, Dyer also played baseball for two seasons. He also coached two seasons of junior varsity basketball two years of cross country for La Verne. After graduation from LVC, Dyer went on to earn his master's degree from Pasadena College in 1970. He continued his affiliation with his alma mater by serving on the La Verne College Alumni Board, and later became the President of the La Verne Athletic Association (LVAA). Dyer's passion and commitment was recognized in 1996, when he was named the University of La Verne's Alumnus of the Year in 1996 for service to alma mater. Dyer has served as a teacher in the Chino Valley School District since 1965 will retire in June. He lives in La Verne with his wife, Sue and are the parents of two children, Kristi and Mark.

George Jaeger GEORGE JAEGER ('73) - One of the great track and field performers in La Verne athletic history, Jaeger was named the team's most valuable performer for three consecutive years (1971-73). His personal best of 48'6" in the triple jump stood for more than 30 years. An NCAA qualifier in both the long and triple jump, he finished 13th nationally in the long jump in 1971. A product out of Claremont High School, Jaeger was also a three-year starter (1970-72) at defensive back on the Leopard football squad, earning Pomona Valley Defensive Player of the Week honors during his senior season. A 1973 graduate of La Verne College, Jaeger earned both his master's (1988) and educational doctorate (1996) degrees from the University of La Verne. He serves as the principal of Northrup Elementary School in Alhambra. Jaeger resides in San Dimas with wife Cyndi and has three children,daughter Heidi and twin sons Hans and Haden.

Julie (Ewens) Frick JULIE (EWENS) FRICK ('80) - Frick helped propel La Verne's rise to national prominence in women's volleyball as a four-year starter from1976 to 1979. As a middle blocker on the Leopard squad, she was team MVP and a All-SCIAC First Team selection in both the 1978 and 1979 seasons. Prior to that, the product of William Workman High School was selected as the team's most improved player as a freshman in 1976. As a senior, she led ULV to a 9-1 conference mark, guiding the Leopards to its first-ever SCIAC Championship in women's volleyball in '79. In her one season of basketball, Frick earned the team's Most Improved Player award during the 1978-79 season. A 1980 graduate of La Verne, she also earned a master's in education from ULV in 1995, and currently teaches in the Glendora Unified School District. The former Julie Ewens is married to former ULV football standout Brad Frick, with whom they have one daughter, Courtney.

Chris Jones CHRIS (KUEHL) JONES ('81) - Jones was a two-sport standout at La Verne, earning Division III All-American honors in volleyball during her senior season in 1980. Jones arrived to La Verne College in 1977 out of Yucaipa High School, and was a four-year letterwinner on the La Verne Volleyball squad. In her senior year, she also was named to the AIAW All-Tournament Team, leading the Leopards to the SCIAC Championship and a fifth-place finish in the AIAW West Regional Tournament. In addition, she was both the team's most valuable player and a All-SCIAC First Team selection during the '80 campaign. As a basketball player, Jones was a three-time All-SCIAC selection (1978-80) and two-time team MVP (1979, 1980) in her four seasons on the hardwood. A 1981 La Verne graduate, the former Chris Kuehl resides in Fresno and is married to fellow ULV alum Tom Jones, with whom they have three children in daughters Adele, Jenny and Crista.

Roy Smith ROY SMITH ('36) -Truly one of the greatest all-around athletes in La Verne College athletic history, Smith earned 11 varsity letters in his four years (four in track, four in football, two in baseball and one in basketball). In track, "Iron Man Smith" (the nickname given to him by teammates) excelled in several events, ranging from the sprints and relays to longer distances and field events. He set schools records in 100 and 440-yard dashes as a freshman and as a senior. His versatility also was evident in football, where he played guard and tackle en route to earning All-Conference honors in his junior and senior seasons. He also earned two letters in baseball his sophomore and junior seasons, and also lettered in one year of basketball. Smith excelled after his La Verne playing days, employed as a teacher in central California. He eventually spent most of his career with Fresno City School as an elementary school principal, retiring in 1974 after 40 years of service. He continued to be involved in athletics, officiating Fresno State football and basketball games along with serving as a meet official for numerous track and field meets. In 1985, the University of La Verne named him Alumnus of the Year in 1985.

Jack Maloof JACK MALOOF ('71) - A standout baseball star, Maloof earned several accolades during his Leopard career. At La Verne, Maloof was an NAIA District All-American in his senior season after he hit .367 in 1971. He earned NAIA Honorable Mention honors in 1970, hitting .335 that season. He established a school record in 1970 with hits in a season with 89. He also was a standout receiver on the Leopard football team, helping La Verne College to consecutive winning seasons in 1969 and 1970. After being signed to play baseball professionally, Maloof hit .400 in the Penn League and later led the Carolina and Southern League hitting, eventually landing with the Minnesota Twins. He also coached one year with the San Diego Padres and later with the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves. Maloof resides in Chandler, Arizona.
