What is SAAC?

University of La Verne Athletics
Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC)

"The responsibility of voicing the interests of the student-athletes rests within themselves. Our goal is to create an environment in which student-athletes can express ideas and concerns. Through this process, increased skills in leadership can be encouraged and taught."

The purpose of the leadership council is to open the lines of communication between coaching staffs and administration and the student-athletes, and the student-athletes, to give ownership of our programs to the athletes, as well as developing leadership skills.

The leadership council is composed of 2 representatives from each team. The council is chaired by the Athletic Director and the Senior Women's Administrator. Staff is also welcome to attend any of the meetings. Each captain/leader represents his/her team and shares ideas and concerns about their sport and/or the athletic program. Together the leadership council helps to make our athletic program better by sharing and planning events, problem-solving and dealing with issues of concern. This also encourages ownership of the program by the athletes as well as helping in the development of individual as well as group leadership skills.

After an initial planning and organizational meeting, the council meets every month with the Athletic Director serving a chair. A number of committees will be formed within the leadership council to focus on the issues that are given priority by the council. A staff member will be assigned to assist each committee.

Committees may be organized to focus on some of, but not limited to, the following areas:

  1. Building a social community by creating unity within all sports teams at the University of La Verne.
  2. Service
  3. Awards - inspirational, academic, awards banquets
  4. Leadership
  5. Agenda

Committees

  1. Building Social and Support Community - This community will work on creating unity within all the sport teams at the University of La Verne. The committee is interested in encouraging support for and attendance at all University of La Verne sporting events.
  2. The Service Committee - This committee will work on ways for our athletes to give back to the community, both on campus and into the surrounding area. The committee will need to develop and execute a plan of community service soliciting increased participation from our athletes. Examples: Christmas baskets, Homeless project, LeRoy Boys, McKinley, David and Margaret, elementary schools, high schools, retirement homes, hospitals.
  3. Leadership - This committee is working to encourage our athletes, men and women, to develop their leadership skills through workshops, speakers, surveys, leadership files and inspirational movies.
  4. Inspirational Award Committee - This committee will look at the need for an inspirational award. Develop a plan and process for nomination, guidelines and nomination forms. This committee will distribute the form, tabulate the results, observe the nominee and make the final decision regarding this award.
  5. The Captains Evaluation - Since we believe that our athletes are developing their leadership skills, we also believe that we owe it to them to provide feedback on how they are doing. This will be done in the form of captains' evaluations, which will be completed by their respective teams. This committee will work on defining the role of a captain and developing the evaluation form.
  6. Awards Committee - This committee will focus its attention on our sports award banquets. They will be creating unique ways to improve the awards banquets, as well as tailoring the ceremonies to fit a particular group of athletes.
  7. The Agenda Committee - This committee will organize the agenda for the monthly meetings. They will gather input from the members of the council and then form and develop and distribute an agenda. They will also oversee the taking of minutes and distribution after each meeting.
