It’s that time of year again– time to dust off the mothballs from your dinner jacket and drag out the gown from the back of your closet. The University of La Verne 2006 Winter Formal is upon us.
It is Anchors Away this year as the event hosts a nautical theme, organized by the Campus Activities Board. The Avalon at the Pomona Fairplex will be decked out in sailing regalia.
“The nautical theme gives a fun yet classy atmosphere for the dance and worked well with our venue,” said CAB Major Events Co-chairwoman Sara Johnston.
The Winter Formal is a perfect opportunity for ULV students to relax and to socialize with their peers.
A festive Italian buffet with dessert and unlimited water, tea or coffee will be provided. Students lucky enough to be over 21 can treat themselves to beer or wine from the bar. Of course, identification will be required.
The dress code at this year’s dance is semi-formal, but what exactly does this mean?
“It is dressy, but not over-the-top glamorous,” said Michelle Ajemian, CAB major events co-chair. “For girls, an example would be a classy dress like a cocktail dress. For guys an example would be slacks, dress shirt, and tie.”
The event will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight on Feb. 25 at the Avalon at the Fairplex in Pomona.
A complimentary bus service will run in half hour intervals until 10 p.m. from the Rock at ULV to Fairplex.
Transportation back to ULV will also be provided at the end of the night.
However, if you wish to make your own way there, directions are included with each ticket.
Tickets are $15.
“This year we have lowered the cost of tickets so more ULV students could attend,” Ajemian said. “It is also closer, for convenience.”
Tickets can be purchased from Leo’s Den between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays, and at the ULV Club Fair on Feb. 15. For the procrastinators, there is a last day ‘Midnight Madness’ ticket sale until midnight on Feb. 20 at Leo’s Den.
“The Winter Formal is the only formal dance ULV has, except for Greek Week.” ULV senior Phanny Lun said. “So for people that aren’t involved in Greek Life it’s the only opportunity to dress up.”
ULV students are free to invite guests. Staff and faculty are also welcome. A DJ is scheduled to play a wide range of music, so keep an eye out for your favorite professors strutting their stuff on the dance floor.
Before you singletons run for the hills, fear not—the Winter Formal can be enjoyed by all.
“It’s better with your friends, you have more fun,” ULV senior Gwen Franco said.
And if you’re planning to fly solo, follow Lun’s advice.
“If you can’t get a date, go looking hot, and everyone will wish they went with you.”
