Cupid aimed his arrows in a different direction this year as University of La Verne students did not celebrate Valentine’s Day with the typical chocolates or flowers.

Instead, they spent their evening at the LeRoy Haynes Center in La Verne during “Game Night,” an event organized by the Campus Activities Board.
Game Night was created to help kids at the Center better their social skills and as a form of entertainment.

The LeRoy Haynes Center was established to provide education and a home-like environment for troubled boys.

“For these kids, this is their primary residence,” said Diane Crockett, on-call counselor at the Center.

“I think it’s great to have the interaction with the kids, and let them see the world outside of LeRoy,” she added.

The boys enjoyed the night with ULV students as they played an array of games including air hockey, ping pong, foosball, Connect Four, Dominoes and pool.

While some enjoyed the games, others preferred to dance to the latest hip-hop beats.

“The kids, they love you regardless,” said Mercy Faith Kimbwala, CAB philanthropy chair and Phi Sigma Sigma e-board member. “It’s a great way to spend Valentine’s instead of being bitter at home.”
Members of Phi Sigma Sigma and Sigma Alpha Epsilon were the major
attendants of the event.

“I came to have fun,” said freshman math major Jessica Root, a member of Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. “If they do it again I would definitely like to come.”

Other ULV students also enjoyed the event.

“It’s great that, even for a little while, we can be someone they can look up to,” said Ivy Martinez, a senior Spanish major. “Plus, it was a lot of fun.”

Though cupid may have aimed in a different direction, he surely did not miss because there was still plenty of love.
