Wine 101
Posted March 17, 2006

Here are some basic tips to help a curious novice discover a truly great wine:

• Three steps to finding the perfect wine are:
1. Look at the color
2. Smell the scent
3. Taste it

• When viewing a wine list, the lighter wines will be at the top and the boldest selection will be at the bottom.

• Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot are always safe choices and can be found on most wine lists.

• Red wine is always a great choice when eating meat, while white wines are perfect for fish.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for advice when choosing a wine. You will be surprised how much you can learn.

• When buying a bottle of wine in a restaurant, always expect to pay at least double the original purchase price.

• Keep in mind, less expensive wine will be marked up more than a pricey wine.

• Wine is fat free and contains no cholesterol.
