Suitcase Bingo sends students to Disneyland

The Campus Activities Board is doing its part in making dreams come true at the University of La Verne.

A new activity from CAB called Suitcase Bingo took place on March 16 in the President’s Dining Room.

Suitcase Bingo was a more intense, three hour version of Bingo. Students needed to bring a suitcase of clothes or an overnight bag to the tournament.

The winner and a guest won a limo ride to a hotel in Anaheim where they enjoyed a free overnight stay and a free trip to Disneyland the next day.
Both the winner and guest had to be students from ULV to be eligible for the prize.

“The University of Redlands does this,” CAB Games and Recreation/Intramural Committee chairwoman Kristina Vaughn said.

“We have a networking conference with them and they said that this event is really successful on campus and that we should try it,” Vaughn said.

However the event didn’t prove as successful at La Verne. A mere nine people showed up to play.

“There’s going to be one big round of Bingo and depending on how many people there are, the first 15 are safe,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn and the other CAB members quickly changed the rules and also decided to eliminate one person after each round of Bingo until only three people were left due to the lack participants.

Some came with a strategy to win.

“My friend and I have an alliance so if I win, I’m taking my friend and if my friend wins, he’s taking me,” junior Radio major Ami Smith said.

“It doubles our chances of winning,” Smith said.

Coincidentally Smith’s strategy worked for the first game as she was the first one to call Bingo.

Her lucked died down when senior biology major Virginia Ng won the next four games eliminating others.

“I’m really nervous,” Ng said after the fifth round.

The final three consisted of Ng, Smith and sophomore public administration major Matt White.

In the last game, the last three had to make a “C” on their Bingo sheets from the numbers being called.

“Bingo,” Smith said as she jumped out of her chair with a smile on her face and the winning Bingo card in her hand.

“I’m going to Disneyland,” Smith said.

Smith already established the first priority of her Disneyland trip when she won.

“I want to go on Rockin’ Mountain,” Smith said.

Smith chose Ng to accompany her on the trip.

Soon after the victory, a limo came and whisked the two women away on their getaway to Disneyland.

CAB plans to host “Suitcase Bingo” at least once a semester so that other students can have a chance at winning a trip to the happiest place on Earth.
