LV comm. students win honors

Several University of La Verne journalism and broadcast students recently were honored with prestigious national and international awards.

Staff writers, editors and photographers from the Campus Time and La Verne Magazine won Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, one of the nation’s oldest and largest scholastic press organizations, which is based at Columbia University in New York.

Winners for Campus Times include:
• Yelena Ovcharenko: Two Certificates of Merit for Feature Page Design
• Nila Priyambodo: Two Certificates of Merit for Personal Opinion and News/Feature Story
• Kelly Rivas: Three Certificates of Merit for photo layout; and Second Place for Sports Photography, Portfolio of Work

Winners for La Verne Magazine include:
• Jessica and Kady Bell: Certificate of Merit for Non-Fiction Article or Interview
• Nicole Knight: Certificate of Merit in Non-Fiction Article or Interview; and Third Place for Non-Fiction Article or Interview
• Adam Omernik: Certificate of Merit for Single Illustration Not Based on Photographic Material
• Reina Santa Cruz: Certificate of Merit for Magazine Color Photograph

On the broadcast side, Louis Arreola and Yesel Manrique were awarded a silver statue by the Tellys for their May 2006 senior project, “Eh Day,” a sketch-comedy program.

The Tellys honor video and film work from around the world. The latest competition had more than 13,000 entries.
