Delivering another hit for the University of La Verne, the Campus Activities Board debuted its Commuter Day 2008 with the theme “Billboard Hits: Decades through Music.”

Student clubs and organizations hosted booths Wednesday alongside the “Greek Idol” event, as a part of Greek Week.

“We thought it would be a good idea to do Commuter Day with Greek Week,” Naime Laskar, CAB major events chair, said.

“We knew it would bring in more of a crowd.”

Laskar, who worked solo this semester, put on the event in place of Mr. ULV, which is typically hosted in the spring.

As the major events chair, she would typically work with a co-chair, but this semester she didn’t have one and relied on her committee for support.

“My committee really helped me with everything,” Laskar said. “They helped me with getting everything ready including setting up.”

Commuters who came out to the event were provided with free lunches in addition to souvenir cups.

CAB also gave out raffle tickets for commuters that allowed them to win prizes such as new movies.

The environment, complete with background singing from Greek Idol participants, gave commuters the opportunity to get involved in an on campus event.

“I think it’s a good way to get commuters involved in Greek life,” Matt Izaguure, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon member, said.

“I think it’s a pretty good idea. You get to get involved and see what’s out there,” Alan Rodriguez, sophomore economics major said.

Rodriguez who is a commuter has found a way to get involved in the on-campus group Latino Student Forum, hosted a 1920s themed booth, to raise awareness for the group and their upcoming Noche de Gala event.

Clubs and organizations that hosted booths decorated them according to themes based around music beginning from the 1920s to the present.

The Greek organization Alpha Omicron Pi held a booth based on 50s pop shops.

They served rootbeer floats, with all proceeds to be donated to help panda bears.

Groups such as the Green Institute for Village Empowerment did not have a particular theme but used Commuter Day as an opportunity to come out and raise awareness about there club and the cause they support.

They were also judged on their creativity and the winner was awarded $75 for their club.

Psi Chi, the psychology honor society’s booth was based around the 1950s Rat Pack, and included a table set-up with black jack for visitors to play.

They were awarded first place, taking away the $75 prize.

“This is our second time winning at Commuter Day,” Mariela Alvarez, a Psi Chi member, said. “We are going for organization of the year 2008.”

“But we were really here to have fun,” Alvarez said.

Commuter Day was a smashing success for both commuters and on-campus students.

It gave commuters another opportunity to get involved, and be a part of an on-campus event.
