?A crowd favorite of the night, Cindel de los Reyes performed a memorable rendition of Christina Aguilera’s 1999 hit, “Genie in a Bottle.” Davenport was transformed into a karaoke club as part of the CAB event hosted on April 18 for ULV students.

A night of singing and barbecuing took place at 10 p.m. on April 18 in Davenport.

The only dining spot on the University of La Verne campus hosted “Karaoke Night” which was sponsored by the Campus Activity Board.

The night started out with only a few interested people and then quickly grew due to the surplus of entertainment.

“I’m having a great time and I’m glad it’s a good turnout,” Samantha Dauz, CAB special events committee chair and biology major, said.

The night kicked off with John Smith who sang Gavin DeGraw’s hit song “I Don’t Want to Be” from the popular show “One Tree Hill,” while the audience scarfed down honey barbecue chicken wings.

“I didn’t have any food yet but it looks great,” Giovanni Nabors, a liberal studies major, said.

The stage was set up with a monitor for the lyrics and a microphone for the participants to belt out their favorite song or songs.

The star of the night was freshman Cindel de los Reyes, who ended up singing seven songs by the end of the event.

She sang solo and performed with the help of some of her friends.

“I felt like singing ‘Genie in a Bottle’ by Christina Aguilera,” de los Reyes said. “She’s my girl.”

And that was exactly what De Los Reyes sang during her third time up.
She held the microphone to her face and let her voice out while belting out Aguilera’s high-pitched vocals.

During Aguilera’s lyrics “you gotta rub me the right way,” de los Reyes imitated her by rubbing her bottom and winking to the audience.

Even the tech guy working the stereo system enjoyed and danced along to de los Reyes’ performance.

“She’s wonderful,” Nabors said. “Her singing is great.”

Others performed their favorite songs including “No Scrubs” by TLC, “La Bamba” by Richie Valens and “Superfreak” by Rick James.

One special song was dedicated to the male residents of Brandt Hall. The crowd roared when two performers sang Afroman’s “Because I Got High.” As the song finished, the audience applauded with much enthusiasm.

It seemed that “Karaoke Night” proved to be another successful event for CAB.

“I think it was a great way for people who live in the dorms to get out and have some fun,” Billy Nicolini, an undeclared freshman, said.

“We’ve been having this all semester and this was the last time,” Dauz said.

Dauz said that she could not have been happier with the success of her final effort with the karaoke event.

The entertainment from “Karaoke Night” will continue to give students more nights of pleasure starting up again some time next year.
