New football coach named

Posted May 11, 2007

Ending an arduous search, the University of La Verne on Thursday named Andy Ankeny head football coach. Ankeny will replace Don Morel, who stepped down in January. Ankeny will be ULV’s fourth football coach since 1948.

“I am very excited about the opportunity,” Ankeny said. “My family and I are looking forward to connecting with the community.”

Ankeny comes to La Verne from East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas, where he served as assistant football coach.

He also served eight seasons under the ETBU Tigers staff, most recently as linebackers and special teams coach.

In addition Ankeny was part of the team’s 2003 American Southwest Conference championship run, as he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator of the team.

Hailing from Homedale, Idaho, Ankeny had an illustrious playing career as a defensive back for Taylor University, while also earning NAIA All-American honors.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Ankeny became the graduate assistant for his alma mater. He also worked on a master’s degree from Ball State University.

“He has sound experience ... and has shown remarkable success in his recruiting efforts,” ULV Athletic Director Chris Ragsdale said.

A welcome reception for Ankeny is set for 2:30 Wednesday in the President’s Dining Room.
