Leo’s Den opens with a loud roar
The remodeled Leo’s Den opened its doors this week in the new Student Center located in Leo Hall.
Leo’s Den is a lounge area opened to all students and faculty who want to take a break during the busy school day. It provides the essentials of any college lounge: a television, billiards, arcade games, board games, foosball and two love sacs.
“It’s completely brand new,” said Diana Westmyer, Leo’s Den’s student manager. “Since it is so modern, it’s going to be a great hangout for students before classes and between classes.”
The television set up in the lounge contains a DVD player and over 200 cable channels. The television is not available for reservations, but is set on a first come, first served basis. There will also be a waiting list available.
The lounge area also features services like discounted tickets to amusement parks such as Knott’s, Six Flags, Legoland and Universal Studios, and to movie theaters like Edwards and AMC theaters.
Seasonal passes can also be purchased for the L.A. County Fair and Knott’s Scary Farm. The discount can be up to 50 percent off.
Westmyer hopes that Leo’s Den will be a relaxing and fun place for students to hang out with their friends.
The new Leo’s Den is not only considered a lounge, but a relaxed place for students to study.
A PC workstation of three computers with Internet access is located in Leo’s Den to provide students with an alternative to the standard computer lab.
The newly made over Leo’s Den is more spread out than the previous one.
“Because it’s brand new, we have a lot more to offer than the old Student Center,” Westmyer said.
Westmyer has many plans for Leo’s Den in the upcoming school year including a possible Karaoke night, pool tournament, an open mic night and a grand opening celebration in October.
Leo’s Den is also the source of information for students looking for buildings within the University or the city of La Verne. Maps, activities calendars and local transportation schedules are also available.
The Student Center re-opened this Monday, however some students are still confused about the location of Leo’s Den.
“I don’t even know where it was last year,” said senior Timothy Ciancio, a TV broadcast major. “I’m a commuter so I never really spend much time looking for things, I usually go home on breaks.”
Leo’s Den was relocated from the Supertents this summer.
Westmyer and Associate Director of Student Life Chip West worked through the summer preparing the center.
“We’ve been working throughout the summer just getting the center clean and writing a procedure manual,” Westmyer said.
The new Student Center is now hiring for work-study students only.
Leo’s Den will be opened Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to midnight, Fridays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on the weekends from noon to 5 p.m.
