The University of La Verne women's soccer team played Cal Lutheran Wednesday, beating the Regals, 3-2.
Coming off a heartbreaking loss to Occidental last Saturday, in which the Leopards blew a 2-1 lead, ULV was led by their defense and thwarted any comeback from Cal Lu.
Going into halftime with a 3-1 lead, the Leopards looked as though they had the game.
However, at the 51:42 mark in the game, Cal Lu scored on a questionable off sides call.
“At that point we were trying to eat up the clock,” head coach Wendy Zwissler said. “We were sending the ball in and defending, the more field they have to gain the more room for error with ball control and that's what we were hoping for. A win is a win, we would like to have won more decisively.”
“We have a very strong defense and that is what saved our game,” forward Claudia Ramirez said.
Although the call was questionable the Leopards did not have the time to question the referee.
“You don't have time to say anything,” Zwissler said. “This team motivates themselves so the team came back and knew what they had to do.”
Captain Nataly Clavel thought the team started off strong but could have handled the ball better.
“When Cal Lu scored that second goal we didn't feel sorry for ourselves,” Clavel said. “You have to let that call go and can't let the refs control the game.”
Coach Zwissler also added that they are a very young team, however, they know what needs to be done in practice towards getting better as the season progresses.
ULV improved their record to 2-2-1 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and 4-4-2 overall. The Leopards will host Whittier College (1-9 overall, 0-4 SCIAC) tomorrow at Ben Hines Field.
Whittier has only scored one goal in SCIAC competition this season. The Leopards and Poets battled to a 0-0 tie last season in game featuring 34 fouls.
“We're hoping to get a lot of girls in the game that haven't played yet so they can get some experience,” Clavel said.
