Almost every seat was filled with attentive audience members as they listened to the welcoming comments made by the faculty and staff on the University of La Verne’s annual Preview Day, held on Saturday in Founders Auditorium.
“The amount of people in attendance has been growing in the past two years,” Dean of Admissions Ana Liza Zell said. “It was a phenomenal turn-out this year with 390 people in the auditorium, there were people in both the bottom level and the balcony.”
Donna Urquidec, the mother of an alumnus, was present with her daughter Katherine Kimble, a senior at Madison High School in San Diego. They were both glad to be attending the event and obtaining information. Urquidec explained her hope for her youngest child, currently an infant, would attend ULV.
The prospective students and parents began their day with registration in the Founders Hall lawn and then proceeded into the auditorium to hear speakers discuss and clarify any issues concerning admissions and financial aid.
Concerns that arose were questions regarding letter of recommendations, filling out the application properly and the deadline for it.
After the discussion, the crowd dispersed into one of four locations that are related to their major.
“In the education session, I had over 50 students come and listen,” Assistant Professor of Education Amber Rodriguez said. “They mainly wanted to know about the teaching credentials and the time frame when receiving them and getting a job.”
Rodriguez also mentioned that parents told her they could see their children going to school in La Verne and they could see them becoming teachers here.
The College of Arts and Sciences, whose meeting location was in Dailey Theatre, also had a resourceful discussion.
“We talked about what it means to be a liberal arts student (at ULV),”
Fletcher Jones Chair of Biology Jeffery Burkhart said. “I also discussed how a typical day and week is like in college. Different programs including January Interterm was discussed.”
Professor of Business Administration Janis Dietz was the representative for the College of Business and Public Management located in the auditorium.
“We discussed what kind of jobs people would have with specific majors,” Dietz said.
“They loved La Verne, loved the atmosphere and the La Verne family,” she added. “I’ve been here 11 years and it is a family.”
The feedback from the prospective faculty and staff was affirmative.
“They seemed positive with positive comments and they appreciate the time we spent speaking to them,” Burkhart said.
Those who were involved also had positive feedback.
“It was fantastic,” Dietz said. “The admissions office always does a splendid job every year.”
