A swarm of bees, initially thought to be a beehive, was exterminated Friday after two students reported seeing the bees in a tree adjacent to the Barkley Annex and directly in front of the Oaks Residence Halls at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Michelle Hu, a B-top resident, reported the presence of the bees to the housing office, which in turn reported it to facilities management.

“There was a slight panic,” Hu said. “But I just avoided it.”

Housing contacted Campus Safety at roughly the same time, which took measures in assuring that the area was taped off.

“We’re putting caution tape for anyone who is allergic to them,” Laura Avalos, campus safety officer, said. “Terminix will take care of it.”

Terminix pest control cleared the bees approximately three hours later.

This is not the first time the problem has occurred at the University of La Verne. There have been similar cases several times before, Avalos said. The bees have usually been cleared a few hours later.
