Pins flew Nov. 12 at the Oak Tree Lanes in Diamond Bar, as La Verne employees competed in an annual bowling match. Attending the match were Jennifer Breitigan, Jim Irwin, Debra Martin and Lena and Fernando Ramos from the team I Can’t Believe It’s Not Gutter. Ending the night, first-time winners Pin Busters took the title of first place.

On Tuesday lanes one through 10 at Oak Tree Lanes in Diamond Bar were filled with rambunctious bowlers.

This rowdy crowd was not made up of University of La Verne students, but rather classified staff.

The Classified Committee sponsored the annual ULV bowling night from 6-8 p.m.

“We put it on to bring classified staff together to enjoy each other’s company outside of work,” said Christy Ranells, administrative assistant and classified committee chair.

“Every lane is taken up,” said Veronica Ashcroft, work control coordinator and classified committee activities chair.

“It‘s exactly what we expected,” Ashcroft said.

The teams consisted of five participants eighteen years of age or older and each team was required to have at least three ULV employees on it.

The cost to participate was $10 per person and each team received shoe rentals, one large pizza and a pitcher of soda.

Many of the teams came up with creative names, including Pin Busters, Up Your Alley, the Lane Brains and the HR High Rollers. Some of the teams even wore matching shirts to show off their team spirit.

The night was not about winning or losing, although there was some rivalry between the HR High Roller from the human resources department and Up Your Alley from the center for teaching and learning. The two teams even had a dance off to the music of Michael Jackson.

Cheers filled the bowling alley and celebratory dances could be seen on almost every lane throughout the night.

One particular employee was so into the game that she fell face first onto lane nine while attempting to keep herself from crossing the line.

The fall made for a few good laughs but she did not let it affect her game and was back to bowling in no time.

Although everyone played well, there were a few key players that evening. According to Martine Miraflor from the HR High Rollers, Frank Patano was their secret weapon.

“We call him the ‘sleeper’,” Miraflor said. “He turned out to be a really good bowler.”

Fifty-fifty tickets were on sale all night and in the middle of the second game, the winner was announced.

As the number 064093 was read aloud, Cheryl De Vroom, administrative assistant, jumped up from her seat to claim her $57 prize.

At the end of the night, first place was awarded to the Pin Busters who received a team display plaque.

The highest scoring female was Valerie Shafie, administrative assistant from Up Your Alley with a score of 157 and the highest scoring male was Gerald Botello from the Lane Brains with a score of 197. The most improved team was awarded to Up Your Alley.
