Letter to the Editor
Posted November 18, 2005

Dear Editor,

After reading Alex Braden’s rant about the Campus Times article, “Which props. deserve to get props?” [“Letters to the Editor,” Nov. 11], I felt inclined to respond for a few reasons.

First, I would like to point out that an individual should never rely on one news source as his or her sole basis of information. To do so would result in a person with narrow, misguided, or otherwise undeveloped views.

Secondly, newspapers, like the Campus Times, usually practice the journalistic principle of providing balanced news, except in the “Opinions and Editorials” section. Incidentally, articles expressed on those pages convey the views of the editorial writers and editorial staff. Therefore, those articles are not held to the standards of unbiased journalism and the opinions expressed are not necessarily the views of those reading the paper or the views of any explicit political party.

Lastly, Braden’s letter should alert the faculty that high school did not do an adequate job preparing students for the “real world,” or at least college. Please consider substituting Journalism 100 for one of ULV’s many core classes. After all, it would be a travesty to send students away with the belief that they could rely on a small weekly newspaper for all of their news information needs. And it’s naive to believe that the paper should and would be completely unbiased.
