Physical education lacks variety
Posted November 18, 2005

How lame is Fitness for Life? Now that we have your attention, we just wanted to let you know what we thought about the class. For all of you who have taken the class already, you may agree with us that the class is a complete waste of time.

For those of you that have taken the class, how many of you actually remember something meaningful? There are interesting topics and information taught in the course but shouldn’t we leave that to movement and sports science majors?

Despite all of the mumblings and grumblings, there is a solution to solving this. Years ago, ULV offered a variety of different activities that you could take for classes. Back in those days, you needed to take two semesters of some type of sports activity to complete the general education requirement. You could take a baseball class or a flag football class. If you were feeling extreme on registration day, you could take kayaking or climbing. Kayaking class would take place on Puddingstone Lake and climbing would be taught off the side of the Mainiero Building.

Wouldn’t that be great to see a bunch of students climbing past the windows of your biology lab while you try to dissect a frog? There were many other options for students who were not interested in the basic sports like baseball or football. Group games were offered as well. Group games included outside games that you played at recess when you were children such as four-square and dodge ball.

It’s very simple – Fitness for Life versus an activity of your choice. The activity of your choice would provide the student something fun to take while still gaining credit and learning something new.

Would you rather get up at eight in the morning and listen to a lecture on muscles or heart disease or instead do something that lets you work out your muscles and heart in a fun environment?

This may sound so elementary to some of you, but the point is that everyone usually found something they liked and they could relate to.
Presently, we must take Fitness for Life, the dreaded class that serves as an obstacle for students trying to conquer the general education requirements at ULV. Let us take a risk and do something fun again.
Fitness for Life can stay but leave it to those interested in taking the course.
