Experiential Learning:
It has been demonstrated that students with meaningful internship experiences or other real world exposure have an advantage over students who don't. We want to insure that our students have this advantage. We would like to require all students to have some type of experiential learning experience as part of their graduation requirements. To accomplish this we must first invest in resources necessary to cultivate business internship opportunities and establish contacts with business and non-profit organizations to provide project and other volunteer opportunities for our students.
Skills for Success:
With our commitment to diversity and a large number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, we have an added responsibility for providing the extra tools necessary to help our students be successful. Many students come to ULV lacking self-esteem, basic skills that we all take for granted, and the confidence to compete effectively for the best jobs after graduation.
The Skills for Success program would consist of 3 key components:
Enhanced integration of technology into the curriculum:
With technology transforming our lives and businesses, effective information technology education in business schools is critically important to our students. Employers tell us that students who are experienced and comfortable with the use of technology have an advantage on the job market. Our initiative includes the installation of ERP software to use in many of our core classes. This software will be built around a fictitious company and will be used to help students make better decisions. When fully implemented, this initiative will make students more comfortable with using technology and it will be a true differentiator for our business programs.
Summer Business Camp:
The College brings high school juniors to our campus each year for a three-week stay. These students have the potential to attend college but are not planning to do so because of cultural, financial or other reasons. The students attend specially designed classes developed to assist them in making an enlightened decision regarding college. They participate in field trips to local businesses, as well as learn from guest speakers of local businesses. They live in the dormitories and eat their meals on campus. The experience provides them with a true feeling of what college life entails, as well as assist them in understanding the exciting world of business and how to apply for and fund their college education.
