Refraction of a Dream

from 1988 by Elizabeth Pietrzak

Yes, I know we swam
leapt crept imagined
grasped oh we manifested
much more than either of us
would ever dream alone.
So it comes down to this
my dear, my heart,
my god, I do love
you I do, and your husband
is an impasse we must accept, I know.

So know this of me, that the stars did not shine, that the sun never rose and the salt water of the Pacific Ocean never licked my feet until the moment you appeared to me after a vision so many years ago. Now, I know you are the unknown girl am Zentrum

materialized before me today, a week ago, three months ago sixteen years ago. My god, if I had only known how to give you form, known how my commands to the gods and spirits would be answered in such raw and full reality. Rather than wait for you to find your way half a billion seconds later

I would have dreamt you alive and to my bed.
