As most students headed to the beach on what seemed like the hottest day of the year, the University of La Verne track and field team headed to Occidental College for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Dual Meet Championship.

Schools competing for the title were Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer and ULV.

The Leopard's biggest competition came from CMS.

"We had superb performances, excellent marks by almost everyone, to compare other dual meets, this is by far the best one," said La Verne assistant coach Cres Gonzalez

Jason Riley finished first in high jump with a height of 6'6". Kelly Wood took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:59.44, behind Pat McGrail of CMS.

He also finished fourth in the 5,000.

Will Lawson took the top spot in 400-meter intermediate hurdles and the 400-meter dash with times of 53.28 and 48.19, respectively.

The 200-meter dash saw a close finish between winner Kameron Jones of Occidental, and Eric Thomas of ULV, with the times 21.75 and 21.98, respectively.

Thomas finished third in the 100-meter dash, just outracing the Leopards' Dimitri Watson.

In the men's events, Brandon Tedrow, currently third in the conference in the javelin, placed in the top five in all of his competing events.

Tedrow placed second in the javelin and the discus with respective distances of 183'03", just behind Ryan Gibson of CMS, and 152'10".

"I do so much stuff that I'm never going to have a huge day in one event," Tedrow said. "But overall they (the scores) were pretty consistent, like what I've been doing all year."

Ryan Cairney placed fourth in the javelin, behind Justin Gruber of Occidental.

Both freshman Jeremiah Fellows and Tedrow tied for third in pole vault with a height of 12 feet.

ULV finished second in both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relay, finishing behind the Stags.

The men placed second in the 4x400-meter relay, while the women placed third behind Occidental and CMS.

The women's events saw top finishes from Liz Lucsko, Lori Waters, Christy DuLapp, Dejuana Satchell, in long jump, shot put, high jump, and 100-meter dash.

Lucsko's long jump distance is among the top three in Division III. Leti Arroyo's time in the 1,500-meter run came close to a school record.

ULV took second and third place in the triple jump from Lakia Sims and Liz Lucsko, respectively.

Luckso placed second in the high jump and the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.18.

Waters finished second in discus with a distance of 119'03", just behind the Stags' Sarah DeGraw.

Monica Martinez had strong second place finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:54.21, and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles finishing after the Stags' Andrea Haver.

Leti Arroyo placed second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:53.02.

Dejuana Satchell finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.04.

The Leopards finished second in the meet. Currently, ULV stands second in the conference with CMS going undefeated. The Leopards only have one loss to Claremont.

"We wanted to win against Claremont. It wasn't possible, but it was a valiant effort from everyone," Gonzalez said.

The next meet is Friday's Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. Will Lawson will be among the competitors Sunday at the prestigious Mt. SAC relays, where he will be competing against Division I schools.
