With Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play over, the University of La Verne men’s tennis team had the honor and privilege to send two of there best to postseason play.

Sophomore Mike Longanecker and freshman Mario Backes will continue to play the individual ITA Summer Circuit.

This past weekend they traveled to the Ojai Valley Tennis Club in an invitational meet to take on some of the best players in Division III and other independent colleges.

Longanecker was able to defeat Ali Korman of Chapman but unfortunately, La Verne was unable to place any higher on the scoreboard.

Head coach Steve Bergovoy was very pleased his team’s performance this season.

“The chemistry was great,” Bergovoy said. “The team did perform at a higher level individually and won more team matches than the previous season.”

La Verne hopes to add to the chemistry by adding a few more top recruits to their squad. Two prospects the Leopards are after are internationally ranked with experience playing some of the best players in the world. La Verne plans to recruit the No. 1 players from Chile and Colombia along with a Davis Cup team member.

“With every one coming here next year we should be a top 10 nationally ranked team,” Bergovoy said.

With La Verne not winning SCIAC for a few years now, Bergovoy believes that this next year will be the year.

“Redlands will be the team to beat,” Bergovoy said.

Redlands has the most SCIAC titles along with capturing the Ojai Tournament last weekend.

La Verne is looking forward to the summer tournaments and perfecting their skills. With Backes not traveling back to Switzerland this summer it will help gain more experience for the Leopards.
