After eight years at the University of La Verne, Director of Campus Safety and Transportation John Lentz announced he will retire.

His last day will be May 29.

“It is time to go,” said Lentz, who is looking forward to a cross-country vacation with his wife, including stops in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.

“This has been a real great place to work,” said Lentz, who started in May 1996. He said he will remember his work here fondly.

Lentz, also a ULV graduate, said that the University has not yet found someone to replace him. Until a replacement is named, the current crew will take care of business.

Lentz said that he had been thinking about retirement since October and had discussed it with Executive Vice President Phil Hawkey.

“Also my wife had something to do with my decision,” Lentz said, adding that she wants more time with him.

Lentz’ greatest challenge was the parking permit program, he said. The University budget does not allow the campus safety department to have enough staff to manage the program effectively, he said.

Campus safety officer Danny Khano, who came to the University two years after Lentz’ arrival, said Lentz has been a “good mentor, good teacher and good leader.”

Gary Hogle, an information technology specialist at the Learning Enhancement Center, said he will be sad to see Lentz leave.

“I have a lot of respect for him,” Hogle said. “He is someone you can trust. You can tell that he means business.”
