The University of La Verne golf team turned in its best finish ever in the Division III National Championships last week with a sixth-place performance at the PGA at Oak Valley in Beaumont, Calif.

The Leopards rallied as a team to shoot 296 in the fourth and final round of the tournament, their best team total in the four days by four strokes.

But it was too little too late, as Gustavus Adolphus of Minnesota won the overall team title by 12 strokes over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival and tournament host Redlands and by 21 strokes over ULV.

Joe Skovron led the Leopards in the individual race with a 17th-place finish (74-73-76-76–298). Andrew Garcia finished in a tie for 24th (75-75-75-76–301) while co-SCIAC player of the year Joey Murray finished in a tie for 32nd (78-77-75-73–303).

Freshman first-team all-conference selection Nathan Logan finished tied for 41st (83-75-76-72–306).

Brad Booher rounded out the Leopard squad with a 109th-place finish (74-81-84-89–328).

This season’s overall sixth-place performance is a vast improvement on last year’s national tournament finish of 21st out of 23 teams.
