La Verne quarterback Rollie Dykstra has been taken off the respirator and is breathing on his own after suffering a life-threatening head injury during the University of La Verne's Oct. 19 Homecoming game against the University of Redlands, attorneys told local newspapers this week.

The family of Rollie Dykstra has hired Ontario-based injury attorney Martin Cervantes, to investigate the circumstances surrounding Dykstra's injury.

Cervantes is currently reviewing videotapes he obtained from the University of the Oct. 19 game.

Dykstra had complained about persistent headaches after he apparently suffered a slight concussion in the Leopards' Oct. 5 game against Cal Lutheran, according to reports from local papers.

Dykstra was severely injured in the Oct. 19 game against Redlands University when he was hit hard by a Redlands opponent.

According to reports, Dykstra has been given a 50 percent to 60 percent chance of returning to functional health.

Dykstra is still in serious condition at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

Dykstra, 24, is from Redlands. This is his first year at the University of La Verne and his first year playing on the Leopard team.
