Letter to the Editor
Campus Times
November 15, 2002
Dear Editor,
As a reader of the Campus Times, I often read Amanda Stutevoss' columns
and am always refreshed to read her usual introspective spin on things in
such a biased newspaper. However, I was outraged at her recent column, "Can these women really rock?"
[Nov. 8]. Honestly, I feel that her point in this article has a lot of truth
to it. Many artists out there do not get a lot of exposure because they
are not as sexually attractive as Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Jennifer
Lopez and Jennifer Love Hewitt. However, to include Christina in your article
without acknowledging her undeniable talent is almost blasphemous. I really
feel that she should have done all of her homework on these artists before
she grouped them all together as talentless sex kittens. That may be the
case for the rest of them, but Christina Aguilera is a three-time Grammy-winning
artist whose current release has received as much acclaim as John Mayer's,
not to mention the fact that she wrote, arranged and produced the majority
of the album. The very magazine, Rolling Stone, that Stutevoss complains
about her being on the cover of gave an excellent review of the album which
was obviously overlooked.
Also, to say that female artists get all the attention in the music
industry is totally untrue - I mean you have to be living in a cave to not
have seen all the publicity Eminem receives for his music and current film.
Overall, I understand Stutevoss' arguments, but beyond Christina Aguilera's
sexy appearance is an amazing talent that should not be overlooked.
