Letter to the Editor
Campus Times
November 1, 1996
Dear Editor,
I am somewhat confused by Christie Reed's column of Oct. 25, "Willie
not so slick this time." Is it the intent of the Campus Times to
take a partisan position in the upcoming election? If it is not, and I seem
to remember that CT has not supported particular candidates in the past,
then what is the meaning of allowing so specifically partisan a statement
as "slick Willie" in so prominent position in the paper? It seems
that the CT should be above the kind of mudslinging that that statement
implies. I would hope for a higher level of political dialogue from the
only voice representative of the student body on campus.
All this said, it is to ignore two other questions raised by the article:
first, why an article critical of Clinton for a lack of knowledge of the
Constitution should itself be filled with errors in grammar and syntax;
and second, why anyone who is a student in this day and age is even remotely
considering voting Republican, a party which, by its platform statements,
seeks to severely curtail or eliminate loans to students for education.
However, to comment on these would be to, first, call the grammatical knowledge
of Ms. Reed into question, or, second, to begin a dialogue on real political
issues in the campaign, something the CT seems to be seeking to avoid given
the publication of this kind of article.
Hoping for a more serious level of political dialogue, I am yours most
sincerely,
David R. Werner.
