Some people go to Las Vegas to gamble, have fun under city lights, stay in crowded rooms until the wee hours of the morning to experience the nightlife. Those under 21 or without tons of money went to Monte Carlo Night in Davenport Dining Hall Tuesday, Nov. 5.

"The Emerald City" themed Monte Carlo Night this year, was a take off of the Homecoming theme, "ULV... There's No Place Like Home" which originated from "The Wizard of Oz."

"It's a way for all different groups of people to have fun together," said freshman Celena Bliss.

"Monte Carlo Night is a night of gambling, dancing, with roulette, poker and blackjack tables," said Associated Students Federation (ASF) Forum President Tracey Landisi.

There was no charge for this ASF sponsored event. Non-ULV students were allowed to attend the function, but only ULV students qualified to win prizes from the raffle drawing.

Some gamblers were winners, while other became frustrated. "I'm off and on," said senior Gil Gomez, "it depends on the roll."

Every person who attended Monte Carlo Night received $300 to wager on any table the individual desired.

Landisi said, "For every $100 collected in chips, a raffle ticket was given to the individual." Each person attending was only allowed to win one prize, but the person was able to choose which prize to keep.

Junior Jerome Garcia said, "It's a really good experience, a lot of people showed up; They (ASF) should have more things like this."
Junior Kris Arellanes echoed the same feelings as Garcia, "There is more people than I expected, it's a good turnout."

The raffle tickets were placed in the drawing for prizes, which included Slinkies, glow in the dark wall stars, license plate frames, a hoop ball, rainbow-colored playdoh, a copy of the "Toy Story" movie, two copies of "The Wizard of Oz" movie, a back massager, a camera, a coffee maker, lava lamp, cordless phone, boom box and final prize of the evening, a VCR.

Winners of the prizes included junior international student Claudia Paez who won a slinky but later traded it for the cordless phone. Junior Kimbley Craig was the winner of the glow in the dark wall stars, freshman Evin Hall received the "ULV...There's No Place Like Home" license plate frame, senior Mike Whipple won the hoop ball, junior Michelle Runyan won a playdoh set, senior Tamara Lien walked away with a back massager, senior Jenny Zwissler got the Mr. Potato Head, while freshman James Biller received the coffee maker. Junior Aung Wun took the boom box.

The VCR was won by senior Claudia Jimenez. "I have never won anything, this is the icing on the cake," she said.
