Nothing but clouds hung over Ben Hines Field Tuesday when the University
of La Verne men's soccer team took on the Tigers of Occidental. And cold
weather quickly followed, making it difficult for both teams to get warmed
up.
The game was scoreless at the end of regulation, until the Leopards saw
a little sunlight, scoring two goals in overtime to win 2-0.
The game began rocky with the Leopards not being able to put the ball to
feet. However, the Tigers could not capitalize in the air or on the ground
so the game remained scoreless.
During the first half, much of the game was played at midfield, with both
teams having trouble completing the pass. At one point, the Occidental goalkeeper
came out of the box to challenge a shot, but the ball was sent high, clearly
missing the net.
Most of the excitement revolved around the aggressive play by La Verne who
had ample yellow cards throughout the game.
The second half for La Verne came up empty as well, as the team continuously
missing shot after shot. A bright spot for the Leopards proved to be their
defense and the outstanding play of goalkeeper Tim Kyle.
At the end of the regulation, it was clear that both teams were very tired
and wanted to go home, but it was La Verne who made the first move.
With 8:58 left in the first half of overtime, junior half back Aaron Jones
scored when he deflected in a shot by sophomore Sean Piazza that bounced
off the goalkeeper to make the score 1-0.
Occidental, who whined the entire game begging for fouls, let their mouths
get in the way of their play and once again the Leopards made them pay.
In the second half of overtime, ULV did it again. With 8:07 left to play,
freshman midfielder Armando Hernandez sent a beautiful through ball to Darrin
Soliday who tapped it along to Jones who scored his second goal of the match
right through the keeper.
That was all she wrote for the Tigers.
On Saturday, La Verne took on the Poets of Whittier and lost, 3-2, on a
penalty kick to the host Poets.
La Verne's record is now 3-14 overall going into yesterday's season finale
against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags on Ben Hines Field.
