Traveling south to Point Loma Nazarene College in San Diego, the University of La Verne women's basketball team lost Tuesday, 76-65.

Though senior Katie Miner had 14 points, 13 rebounds and freshmen Lori Johnson had 22 points and 19 rebounds they could not overcome Point Loma's shooting extravaganza.

Senior Robin Blalock from Point Loma hit four of five three-pointers and 25 points and six rebounds for the game.

The Crusaders broke out to a 7-0 lead early in the game shooting 41 percent from the field (30-74), but the Leopards came back to take their only lead, 15-13, in the middle of the first half.

As the first half ended, the Crusaders were on top, 47-31.

"We need all five players to be on the court at the same time," said Miner. "We are inconsistent and that hurts us a lot."

Sophomore Jennifer Spring added 11 points for ULV.

The game ended with a final score of 76-65.

Last Saturday, the team went to play an away game that ended up going into overtime against the Chapman Panthers with Chapman on top, 79-78. The game was close enough to have a 31-31 tie at halftime.

The teams went back and forth at both ends of the court through the first half until sophomore Jennifer Spring stepped up and made six points in a row to give La Verne a lead.

In the second half, Chapman scored off a rebound, and a three point shot by Courtney Kanegae was good and Chapman took the lead.

With only 34 seconds left and La Verne down by four, freshman Lori Johnson drove towards the basket to pick up a quick two points.

Next, senior Katie Miner found a hole in the Chapman defense and tied up the score.

Another Chapman turnover gave La Verne the chance to win but the shot by Miner missed, sending the game into overtime.

With 55 seconds to go in overtime, La Verne led by two with a score of 76-78.

A foul by Miner sent Chapman to the line, making only one of the two baskets to tie the score. Chapman then scored two points from the top of the key to put the final score in their favor, 79-78.

"I felt we kind of lost it during the second half," said head coach Julie Kline. "But this game was the best game so far for the season."

Spring had 12 points and five rebounds, junior Katie Dooling and senior Kelly Perkins each had 10 points while Johnson scored 21 points with seven rebounds.

Miner, who had 21 points and 12 rebounds said the team "played well but we should have put them away in the middle of the second half."

Tomorrow at 2 p.m. the women travel to El Cajon to play Christian Heritage.
