All-nighters take studying off-campus

With final exams beginning next Thursday, many students will pull "all-nighters"
to study for their tests or complete their research or term papers.
Many students will choose to do the studying at local restaurants where
they can eat and study at the same time in an atmosphere where people are
awake.
Some students travel down Arrow Highway to San Dimas to Denny's Restaurant.
Denny's is open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, where many students can
be found studying at various hours of the day. They can be seen chowing
down on a late night snack or cooling off from the heat of studying with
an ice cream sundae.
"During the finals week we get a lot of students wearing sweats
and their backpacks very late at night," said Lisa Hackmen, a Denny's
waitress.
"Some just order drinks while the others order food and sit there
for hours at a time. We don't mind them coming in and studying at weird
times, they actually keep us company sometimes," said Hackmen.
Another 24-hour restaurant where students will be found studying is
Michael J's restaurant located at the corner of Foothill Blvd., and Fruit
Street in La Verne.
Michael J's is more convenient for La Verne students because of the
location.
Sometimes students meet others at Michael J's for study groups or just
to enjoy each others company while studying.
"Students come into the restaurant during finals all of the time.
They even come in during the school year just to study for regular tests,"
said Cindy Henderson, a waitress at Michael J's.
"Usually the same students come in regularly," she said.
The restaurants that are open 24-hours help students stay awake in order
to study and away from the temptation of a 10-minute nap on top of the desk,
which they may feel they need at 3 a.m. This, in many cases, leads to falling
asleep for the rest of the night.
Another place that is open late for students to study is on Bonita and
Arrow Highway -- the Coffee Bazaar. It is open until 1 a.m. Fridays and
Saturdays and 11 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays.
Studying for a couple of hours and having a few cappucinos one is bound
to stay awake for the remainder of the night, which is what some students
do in order to pull all-nighter's studying for their finals.
The Academic Computing Department is considering extending the hours
of the computer labs in Founders Hall to 2 a.m. The extension will be determined
by the availability of staffing.
Most professors will agree that students pulling "all-nighters"
is not the preferred way to study and will remind their students that the
best preparation is to study weeks ahead for the test. But college students
know that usually does not happen too many times, and "all-nighters"
are often a last resort. In such a case, these students can make the best
of the situation by studying and being waited on, with food in their stomachs.
