A burglary took place on the first floor of Brandt Hall on Thursday morning, Feb. 27, sometime between 9:30 and 11:30.

The suspect is accused of going in through the window facing Bonita Avenue. On a report filed by Campus Safety the victim said he left his room and the windows were locked.

The stolen items consisted of a laptop computer with fax modem and other cords and adapters. The estimated value of the stolen items is $4,500.

John Lentz, director of campus safety, said, "There was no true sign of forced entry." No windows were broken nor doors kicked in.

"The only thing we have that implies forced entry is the screen was missing off the window," said Lentz.

He said the case is out of the ordinary. "It was a little unusual in that there was no forced entry, no suspects were seen, and there were other valuable goods in the room and the were not stolen," said Lentz. "The suspect only seemed to be after computer equipment."

Security stated that the University of La Verne is not responsible for any stolen private property. If a student's parents have home owner's insurance and there is an extension on their policy, then there is a possibility that the policy will cover the stolen merchandise.

It is important to make sure that one's property is clearly identifiable with either a drivers license number or serial numbers on the item. It will help out the police department and Campus Safety a great deal.

Lentz said that in order to make the campus a safer place, everyone should take accountability.

"Most crime on college campuses is from off-campus offenders," said Lentz.
