Senior University of La Verne debater Scott Mac Kay was recently selected
to represent the United States in the Fourth Annual Public Debate vs. the
Irish National Team in the opening ceremony of the National Championships,
March 20 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Mac Kay was one of only three other college debaters throughout the
United States given the honor.
"This is an incredible honor it will definitely be an experience
long remembered in my life," said Mac Kay.
Debate coach Jason Sandford said, "The community of debaters and
judges represented at the Nationals represent the best qualities of the
ideal debate student. It is a tremendous honor for ULV and especially the
Communications Department here at ULV to have such representation at the
National Championships."
Mac Kay teammates are Brenna Bell from Lewis and Clark College, Portland,
Ore., and Dan Nelson from Regis University in Denver, Colo.
Mac Kay's selection was determined from past experiences in debate that
was turned into the National Parliamentary Debate Association.
This submission included such competitions as; three World Championships
competed in; two other international competitions, in which Mac Kay competed
against the Irish; and the Oxford Invitational where Mac Kay and his teammate
placed 10th in the world of the elite invited.
The topic of resolution for the debate was announced as being, "This
House believes that Clinton is beginning to look a lot like Nixon."
Mac Kay said, "I plan to begin preparation for the debate conversing
with my partners via email."
Mac Kay went on to add, "The Irish team is witty and sublimely
structured. They represent Parliamentary Debate very well because they are
strictly structured in parliamentary skills."
"This will be the worst pressure in the world, standing in front
of 300 of the absolute best debaters in the nation, representing them against
the Irish. All the people watching came to win the National Championship
and they will all be watching my teammates and I," said Mac Kay.
