The University of La Verne football schedule has been sent out for the
1997 season.
The Leopards will start their season at home on Sept. 13, against the
Whittier Poets. On Sept. 20, they travel to Occidental to battle the Tigers.
Taking a break from the SCAIC play, La Verne will receive a visit from
Howard Payne University from Brownwood, Texas, on Sept. 27. Howard Payne
is new to the Leopards schedule.
"We've added Howard Payne to our schedule. Howard Payne was a Division
II program and are stepping down to Division III. They will be one of our
toughest opponents," said head coach Don Morel.
Continuing on with SCAIC play, Oct. 4, ULV will be playing against the
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at home and Oct. 11, is planned for the Cal Lutheran
game at home. Then it is off for revenge for the Leopards when they take
on the Azusa Pacific Cougars at home on Oct. 18.
The Homecoming game will be on Nov. 1, against Chapman University. The
Leopards beat Chapman last season, 22-19.
Then the last SCIAC game of the season will be against rival, University
of Redlands.
The Leopards lost in overtime last season to the Bulldogs, 29-22. The
lost ended the season and the three year winning streak for the Leopards
as SCIAC conference champions. ULV has a total of six home games and three
away games.
"We are excited about our schedule for 1997, especially because
of the fact we have six home games. Last year, it really took a toll on
us playing six away games," said Morel.
