A new Inter-Fraternity and Sorority Council (IFSC) executive board was elected last Friday with new IFSC president, junior Alma Barrera (Phi Sigma Sigma), taking the current president position from senior Joe Martinez.

Barrera will lead her first IFSC meeting today at 12:30 p.m. in the West Dining Room. It is also the last meeting of the year.

The IFSC vice president position went to junior Sharlyn Preece (Phi Sigma Sigma), and the secretary position went to Cecelia Torres (Phi Sigma Sigma), sophomore. Junior Mike Medford (Phi Delta Theta) was elected treasurer, and freshman Araceli Esparza (Iota Delta) will fill the position of Public Relations Director, whose duty is to promote Greek events.

Freshmen Maria Sandoval (Phi Sigma Sigma) and Damien Alarcon (Phi Delta Theta) were elected Greek Week co-chairs, who will plan related events, while Kevin Walker (Phi Delta Theta) and Jessie Moreno (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) will act as the new Fraternity Rush co-coordinators.

"I'm looking forward to next year and rebuilding the greek system in light of what happened," said Barrera about the recent expulsion of fraternity Delta Sigma Phi from the University of La Verne campus, one of the main issues currently within the greek system.

In her new position, Barrera hopes to initiate programs that will bring fraternities and sororities into a positive light. Barrera said she hopes to target the faculty and administration first because they have a negative opinion of greeks.

"I think that people on the outer circle fail to see the true sisterhood and brotherhood in the greek system. They need to know what we're doing and how we're planning to change," said Barrera.

In her vice president election speech, Preece said, "I work well with people and I have a lot of time and effort to put into this position."
