Nuts defeat Fury in intramural title game

Freshman Mike Barreiro takes on junior Dale Schroeder in the semifinal
game of intramural basketball Wednesday night. Schroeder's team, the Fury,
went on to the championship game against the Nuts. The Nuts won the game,
58-45.
Intramural Basketball 1997 finally came to a close Wednesday night in
the Supertents as the Nuts defeated the Fury, 58-45, in the championship
game.
"In the previous game we didn't play too well," said Nuts
coach Matt Durant. "We knew this was the game to win, we were much
more athletic."
The Nuts consisted of seniors Carl Caston and Fred Coffee, juniors Durant,
Brian Zavala, Ryan Hawkins, Tamara Loyd, Ivan Battle and Gabe Duran.
Senior Mike Whipple, juniors Dale Schroeder and Katie Dooling, sophomores
Mike Miller, Jennifer Spring and Sergio Paredes, and freshman Landus Rigsby
made up the Fury squad.
The advantage was established early by the Nuts, who went into halftime
with a 12 point lead, 32-20. The Nuts were relentless, with Hawkins putting
on a three-point clinic, scoring 27 points en route to a 58-45 victory.
"Congratulations to the Nuts, especially Hawkins," said Fury
coach Paredes. "We had a great team and went undefeated, but went up
against a great team in the championship. At least we made it to the championship
game."
Senior Andy Moran, intramural coordinator, was proud of the outcome
of this year's competition.
"I'm happy with the turnout, it was the largest crowd ever. There
were 100 participants this year and I only see it getting better,"
said Moran.
