The University of La Verne Physical Education Department changed its name to the Department of Movement and Sports Science, which the department regards as a more accurate title.

Rex Huigens, professor of physical education and assistant athletic director, considers the new department name more appropriate for the academic aspects of the major.

"It is more accurate to what we're doing," said Huigens, chair of the department.

Huigens described the new name as "an umbrella for students, who want to further there education through graduate school."

The new name took effect this academic year.

"Sometimes there's a negative look at P.E. majors. The more scientific name, gives more of an opportunity with academics," Huigens said.

Thus far, the change has faced no resistance, as the department has only heard positive feedback about the name.

"The name on the degree doesn't matter to me," freshmen Andrew Chambers said. He just wonders if his classes will be different.

According to Huigens, classes will not be different, but the new title Movement and Sport Science describes what the major is actually about, which is the study of the human body in many aspects.
