The carrotwood trees in front of the Student Center were removed because the roots raised the concrete sidewalk, creating a hazard for pedestrians. Environmental Care workers Reuben Cortez and Agurieano Torres install a sprinkler system in the new planters. Crepe myrtle trees will be planted to replace the old carrotwood trees.

University of La Verne maintenance spent more than $245,000 making improvements throughout the campus this past summer.

ULV maintenance has worked to finish the improvements before the fall semester. Unfortunately, their goal was not met. According to Director of Facilities Management Brian Worley, "a major chunk has been done."

There have been over 20 different projects taking place this summer. Some changes have been minor and annual, but the majority of the projects have been long term tasks.

The largest and most expensive of these would be the chemical storage facility built at the back of the Mainiero Building. The building is used to store chemicals for the Natural Science Department. This in itself cost $110,000.

Some of the other major improvements are the re-roofing at the Oaks, major painting in both Stu-Han and Brandt Hall, reconstructing the concrete flatwork at the Student Center entrance, relandscaping areas in the back of the Student Center, and the trimming of trees around the campus.

Among the long list of improvements done over the summer, there are still many things to be done. ULV is attempting to find ways to finish these during the school year instead of waiting until next summer.

"The re-hab of the science lab is an on going thing. We are trying to figure out a way to do it over the school year instead of next summer," said Worley.

In the Student Center, a replacement of partitions in the bathrooms and working on the roof are in the future plans, along with redoing the roof in the law library.

A major issue for improvement is the perimeter roofing of the Student Center, but because of the $70,000 cost, it may be held off.

The money that funded the projects done over the summer was primarily from the Operations budget, Physical Plant Fund and residence halls budget.
