A new chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) has been established at the University of La Verne. AMA is the world's largest and most comprehensive professional association of marketers.

It offers many benefits for ULV students. Students can be a member of AMA for a $30 membership fee, which includes a subscription to Marketing News, which is a bi-weekly newsletter that covers marketing issues worldwide.

Each issue of Marketing News contains practical articles on the marketing profession. AMA members receive nine issues of Marketing News each year, which normally would be $70.

"If you can sell, if you can market, you have job security," said Dr. Janis Dietz, assistant professor of business administration.

"The employment kit that you receive with the AMA kit puts you further ahead with practical information to help you develop and implement strategies to land your first professional position," Dr. Dietz said.

There is a directory of 400 companies that typically recruit recent college graduates.

The AMA website has access to a variety of important association news, as well as an official home page of the collegiate division.

The guidebook to the AMA, which is a $10 value, is packed with a 142 pages of must-know information on every phase of the job search process.

"I think the club is a good idea because ULV needs to offer more academic clubs. The chapter will help build the marketing program, said Michelle Runyan, president of AMA.

"The AMA is dedicated to the development of professionalism in every aspect of marketing. It offers a lot of benefits to student members," said Dr. Dietz.

AMA will be the first marketing-focused club that ULV has ever had. It is trying to stimulate the growth of the Marketing Department at La Verne.

"We have a very strong beginning. The first meeting we only had roughly 10 to 15 members, the next meeting we ended up with 25. I think the club will be very influential on campus," said Cynthia Gomez, treasurer of AMA.

In the last year, Dr. Dietz has doubled the number of students majoring in marketing management.

The club plans to meet every other week on Monday nights at 5 p.m. in Landis 101-A. The club is planning a Homecoming booth for the ULV fair on Nov. 1. Interested students may contact Dr. Dietz at ext. 4213 for more information.
