La Vernacula
La Vernacula, the Latino community magazine of the University of La
Verne, is now accepting art, poetry and prose submissions. Forms are available
at Miller Hall Room 115. Deadline for submission is Oct. 24.
Scholarship Funds
Scholarship funds are available for college freshmen, sophomores and
juniors through the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America's Project:
Learn MS '98 essay competition. To win money and prizes, students must submit
a 500-1,000 word essay on Multiple Sclerosis, a registration and sponsor
form, a minimum of $7.50 in sponsorship fees and be postmarked by June 5,

Red Cross
Pomona Valley Red Cross Disaster Services is looking for volunteers
to help others after a disaster. Volunteers are needed who are willing to
commit time to take training, attend practice drills, attend the once a
month Disaster Action Team meetings as well as be on call to respond when
disasters strike. For more information call 622-1348. The Chapter is open
Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Rideshare
Students stuck for a ride to class should try surfing. That is, surfing
the world wide web. The Web suggests the transportation experts at Southern
California Rideshare. Information on carpool, bicycles, bus and rail services
is now available on the Internet (http://www.scag.ca.gov/commute).
Intern Program
New York City study program offers internships in the "Capital
of the World." The internship experience is open to college juniors
and seniors from around the world. For information and applications contact

Fellowships
Eighty fellowships will be awarded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
for full-time study towards a Ph. D or Sc. D degree in biological sciences.
Awards are for three years, with extension possible for two additional years
of full support. The application deadline is Nov. 12. For more information

Slide Show
Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 11:30 a.m. in La Fetra Hall, a slide show and speech
by Mary Ann Smothers Bruni, entitled "Journey through Kurdistan,"
will be presented. This event is sponsored by the Institute of Global Studies.
