Dr. Barbara Jefferson has left her position at University Relations to become the assistant dean of the School of Business and Global Studies.

"It has been a goal of mine to continue to develop a career in higher education. This was a wonderful opportunity to move closer to academic administration," said Dr. Jefferson.

Dr. Jefferson is a 1972 University of La Verne graduate. She pursued a master's degree and her doctorate from Claremont McKenna College. She worked at Scripps College, Whittier and Pitzer College before returning to ULV.

Dr. Jefferson has worked under Dr. Jean Bjerke, vice president of University Relations, for just over two years. Her job title was director of development for corporate and foundation relations. During her term at University Relations, Dr. Jefferson, "helped secure the three largest grants that the University has ever received," said Dr. Bjerke.

In 1995 Dr. Jefferson received her Ph.D. in higher education and "the next step seem to be an assistant dean," said Dr. Bjerke.

Dr. Jefferson will continue to work closely with University Relations as she will continue to be the fundraising liason between University Relations and the School of Business and Global Studies. Dr. Jefferson is there to make sure efforts are coordinated and that everything runs smoothly.

University Relations is happy that Dr. Jefferson has this opportunity, yet sad to see her go.

"She did an outstanding job while working for University Relations," said Dr. Bjerke.

Dr. Jefferson finds that it was time for her to move on in a different direction. "I want to serve ULV in a different manner, but still contribute," said Dr. Jefferson.

"It is wonderful that at ULV you have the opportunity to grow with in the institution," said Dr. Jefferson.

There were a number of applicants for the new position of assistant dean that Dean William Relf had to choose from. He chose Dr. Jefferson due to her many qualities.

"She has outstanding qualifications, experience, enthusiasm. She is professional and has a doctorate in the field of educational management. She already had the respect of faculty, and wants to make the school better," said Dr. Relf.

Dr. Jefferson began her new job Oct. 1. Dr. Jefferson's duties as assistant dean are the primary administration functions within the school and external relations with businesses. Dr. Jefferson also assists Dr. Relf.

"She compliments what I think I can do. I want to get out into the community more," said Dr. Relf.

Dr. Jefferson sees herself as a team player.

"People at ULV work well as a team," said Dr. Jefferson.

Dr. Relf and Dr. Jefferson have a vision for the School of Business and Global Studies which eventually will be a vision for the entire college.

They want to tie in programs with changes in the global economy, plan to put programs or exchange programs in Singapore and Costa Rica and bring closer ties with the Athens campus.

The business school is a growing department. Dr. Jefferson is enjoying her new position. "It's been great, a fast pace," said Dr. Jefferson.

The plan to replace Dr. Jefferson's former position as director of development for cooperate and foundation relations, is in process right now. Advertising and the search process have already begun. University Relations hopes to appoint a replacement by December.
