In hopes of overcoming straight losses last week to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
on Saturday Oct. 11, 7-1, and Redlands on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2-0, the University
of La Verne men's soccer team faced the overpowering Cal Lutheran Kingsmen
last Saturday and suffered its third straight loss in two weeks, 6-0.
The Leopards also travelled to Pomona-Pitzer's home field on Wednesday
and lost, 3-0.
In the loss to Cal Lutheran on Saturday, the Leopards faced instant
pressure from the Kingsmen offense as the La Verne defense faced 15 shots
on junior goalkeeper Jon Tunstall in just the first half alone.
The scoring started early for the Kingsmen as they controlled possession
of the ball superbly in the Leopard's zone and gave forward Jose Mendoza
a wide open shot in the goal box with 15:30 on the clock to put Cal Lu on
top 1-0.
The Leopards continued to fight on defense, but could not get things
going on offense, often struggling to control the ball, and had only one
shot on goal the entire first half. The Kingsmen used La Verne's lack of
control to launch a major attack on the Leopards defense in the middle on
the first half and scored three more goals.
The first of the three goals came from mid-fielder Charlie Noble as
he took a pass from forward Brian Collins in the goal box and fired a hard
shot at Tunstall, scoring the second goal of the game and giving Cal Lu
a bigger lead at 2-0.
The next goal came 14 minutes later as Collins took a streaking pass
from mid-fielder and leading team scorer (11) Oskar Kantoft from the right
side and scored his first goal of the year, 3-0, as Cal Lutheran stood tall.
The fourth and final score of the half came from mid-fielder Jeff Smilen,
three minutes later at 39:07, from a Kantoft pass to send the Kingsmen into
halftime 4-0 lead.
In the second half, Tunstall stood in tougher at goal and was able to
save five out of the Kingsmen's seven shots on goal in the second half.
Although Tunstall recovered, the ULV offense still struggled in the half
and only generated two shots on opposing goalkeeper Guillermo Alvardo resulting
in a dismal game total of only three La Verne scoring attempts.
Cal Lu continued to place the ball well against the ULV. The Kingsmen
again struck the La Verne goal early in the second half, setting up a chip
pass to forward Edwin Astudillo (48:47) to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Kingsmen added another score with time running out from mid-fielder
Ryan Girod, his tenth goal of the season, and shut out the Leopards, 6-0.
