Greeks to give back to community

The annual Charity Greek Week has been scheduled for Nov. 10-15.
"Charity Greek Week is an event sponsored by Greeks to just give
back to the community and come together and do one charity as a whole Greek
community," said senior Alma Barrera, the Inter-Fraternity Sorority
Council (IFSC) president.
"We're trying to promote community service as well as Greek unity
on the ULV campus," said senior Sharlyn Preece, vice-president of IFSC.
Charity Greek Week will consist of an all-campus canned food drive,
a car wash and a softball game with the David and Margaret Group Home in
La Verne.
The money accumulated through the week will go to the McKinley Children's
Center in San Dimas. The canned food from the drive will go to the PomonaInland
Valley Council of Churches.
"All five organizations are really open to having a non-competitive
Greek Week and using it more as a team building activity and reinforcing
that the organizations actually do philanthropy and not just talk about
it," said Preece.
It is similar to previous Greek weeks, "because we try to reach
out to the community and school. We have always had that focus," said
Barrera.
There are usually two Greek weeks. One week is competitive and the other
is a charity.
"There was too much competition with the regular Greek Week and
with Charity Greek Week, we hope to put our effort into making it a more
positive experience of giving back," said Barrera.
Sophomore Maria Sandoval, Greek Week cochair said this is her first
Greek Week.
"I'm really excited about it because it's my first time organizing
something for such a large group," said Sandoval.
When she and cochair, sophomore Damien Alarcon, sat down to discuss
Greek Week, Sandoval said their first purpose was to "promote unity
within Greek organizations and set an example to the ULV community and encourage
them to get involved."
