The University of La Verne woman's soccer team concluded its season
last weekend. La Verne lost to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, 6-1, and then
finished their road trip Sunday at Atherton, where it scrimmaged Menlo and
defeated them, 7-0.
Head coach Wendy Zwissler felt that the road trip was very good for
her team.
"The girls got to live together which helped them bond. It was
good for team experience," coach Zwissler said.
The Leopards finished the season with a 12-4 record. This impressive
record did not help them acquire a playoff birth because of the schedule
they played. The two Western Region representatives were Cal Lutheran and
UC San Diego.
Coach Zwissler said, "We did not have that strong of a schedule.
Next year I am going to schedule the toughest schedule I can so we have
a better chance of making playoffs."
In the game against Santa Cruz, the Banana Slugs would get on the scoreboard
early, scoring their first goal only two minutes into the game. They scored
again 27 minutes into the first half of the game. It was not until three
minutes before halftime when junior forward Angel Mejico scored La Verne's
first and only goal of the game assisted by freshman Katie Zwissler.
UC Santa Cruz would dominate the second half by scoring four more goals
and eventually won the game, 6-1.
Coach Zwissler said, "I thought we improved a lot [this year].
We were extremely young."
The ULV women's soccer team graduates only three seniors this year.
With only two juniors on the team this season and the rest being sophomores
and freshmen, the Leopards are looking forward to having a very strong and
solid team next season.
"Since we have such a young team I know we will go [to the playoffs]
in the future," said Katie Zwissler.
"I'm trying to get the players to play another sport..." said
Zwissler. "I want them to do track. It will teach them how to run."
