Sororities dedicate week to scholars

The Collegiate Panhellenic Association (CPA) has designated Dec. 1-5
as its Week of the Scholar.
"We just became CPA and it's mandatory that we have a Week of the
Scholar," said senior Amber Hall, vice president of CPA.
The Week of the Scholar is a national program designed by the National
Panhellenic Conference (NPC). NPC is a governing council for all 26 national
sororities.
"It is the CPA's first year that they have been active on campus.
Everything is new to them," said Paromita Nag, CPA president.
Every year NPC has a different theme for the sororities to concentrate
on. In fact, a new resolution has just been announced that every year will
be designated as the "Year of the Scholar."
"It gives us good recognition for Greeks from school, faculty,
and each other," said Hall.
"I think it's good because it's giving people praise for getting
good grades which normally goes unnoticed," said junior Diane Ramos,
a member of Iota Delta.
Due to upcoming finals and time constraints, CPA was not able to schedule
week-long activities for the Week of the Scholar, though a scholarship reception
is scheduled for tonight at 6 in Founders Auditorium. There, CPA will honor
sorority members who have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and above. Anyone is welcome
to attend the event and admission is free.
CPA will also be giving a special award to one woman from each sorority
who has at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and "contributes immensely to
her sorority."
"We don't just want to honor the girls who are doing well, we want
to honor girls that are improving their GPA's," said junior Dyane Galindo,
chair of scholarship for CPA.
"CPA will also be honoring one girl from each individual sorority
who has the highest increase in GPA from fall 1996 to spring 1997,"
said Galindo.
"I think it makes those that don't get recognized, strive to be
on the list and encourages them to be recognized in the future," said
Hall.
Currently, Iota Delta has the highest sorority average on the ULV campus.
"I'm very excited about it and I would love to see it continue.
I hope that all three sororities continue to encourage that education comes
first," said Nag.
"All three sororities believe that we are here for an education
first. Education is always the top priority," said Nag.
The Week of the Scholar will be repeated again next semester, provided
that funds are available.
