Spring semester editors chosen
Campus Times
December 12, 1997
The Communications Department has finalized its decision for the new
publication editors for the 1998 spring semester.
These editors are Laura Czingula, editor in chief for Campus Times,
Rob Strauss, editor in chief for La Verne Magazine, Summer Herndon,
photography editor for Campus Times, and Ryan Sones, photography
editor for La Verne Magazine.
"We look at experience, leadership ability, stress level and to
try and see if the person can handle the job," said Eric Bishop, associate
professor of journalism and Campus Times adviser. "She [Czingula]
has been a section editor for two semesters and has been on the newspaper
staff for four semesters."
"At first I was not sure I was the right person, but if the department
is behind me, then I can do it," said Czingula, a senior.
This 24-hour job requires the editor in chief to select the editorial
board, oversee the entire staff, make sure the paper gets out on time, acts
as the editors' assistant, gives writers direction and ultimately takes
responsibility of the overall production of the paper.
"We give no slack," said Bishop. "People recognize you
as as an editor, and it is a certain level of stress. It is a lifestyle."
Hoping to land a job in sports writing or sports broadcasting, Czingula
looks forward to a successful semester.
"Considering we have a lot of staff coming back, I have all the
faith in them to make sure they do their job," said Czingula. "As
far as being the leader, I want it to be fun because none of us are perfect.
We are still in college so we can work hard and still have fun."
For La Verne Magazine, Strauss was chosen because he brings diversity
and leadership to the magazine.
"He has a lot of gumption and get-go," said Dr. George Keeler,
professor of journalism and La Verne Magazine adviser. "He works
well with students and always meets his deadlines."
"It is really good [to have this position] because it will be a
new challenge and will open new doors," said Strauss, a senior broadcasting
major with radio emphasis. "I have to come up with a theme for the
magazine, assign stories, edit stories and make sure people get them done.
I will be ready."
Because the magazine is a "scratch publication," the reinvention
will reflect on Strauss' personality where he will plan the theme of the
magazine.
The editor in chief responsibilities include recruiting staff, being
the cheerleader and disciplinarian, the task master, the corrector of errors
and the person of final responsibility.
"Rob is a person who solves problems before I was aware there was
a problem," said Dr. Keeler. "We, as the faculty, are pleased
with inviting Rob to take the helm for 1998."
"After being program director for KULV, I am ready to handle any
leadership position at ULV," said Strauss.
Herndon, a junior, was chosen because she is quiet, and because of that,
she has developed leadership.
"She has discovered that she has significant talent in the craft
of documentary photography," said Gary Colby, professor of photography.
"She is respected because she quietly does her work, and she can do
this very stressful work."
"Because I really want this position, I will do whatever it takes
to be a leader," said Herndon.
The photography editor's job consists of working with the editor in
chief to develop story ideas and select stories, serve as chief photographer
and guide the photo staff, preview proof sheets, decide which photograph
is best for the paper or magazine, and make a lot of decisions.
"It is really stressful, and they are caught between me, the editors
in chief and the photo staff," said Colby.
"We have a small staff but I hope more people come out," said
Herndon. "But working with a small staff allows you to create friendship
and it is easier to work with a small group."
Sones, a senior, was chosen for being energetic and enthusiastic.
"I was kind of surprised, being that I was on the photography staff
for one semester," said Sones. "Besides, I live in the photo lab
as is already, so it will not hurt me to live there another semester."
"I think he is a good leader, he has a good time and he is conscientious,"
said Colby. "He inspires everybody to make the magazine good."
"Just because I am the photography editor for the magazine does
not mean I am the only photographer," said Sones. "It takes the
staff, the advisers and the editors to make it a complete publication."
