If soccer is appealing, imagine a faster, quicker game with no goalie,
a smaller field and more action.
That is what junior Matt Durant, intramural coordinator, hopes to accomplish
with his new intramural sport -- indoor soccer.
"I wanted something for the everyday person to come out, play and
have fun,"said Durant.
The soccer league is scheduled to begin Feb. 10, but, this will depend
on the gym times available. Today is the last day to sign up for a team.
There have been six teams already confirmed to begin play.
This is a new activity at the University of La Verne, and it could be
around for years to come.
"I would like to start something that will continue on for years,"
said Durant.
There will be eight players on each team, but only five will play at
a time. There may only be three male or female intercollegiate soccer players
on each team, and only one may play at a time. Also, it is mandatory that
one woman be on the floor at all times.
The games will be held in the old gym. Orange cones will establish the
boundaries. The field is smaller than a normal soccer field, and the goals
are smaller, allowing for a quicker game.
There will be two 15-minute running time halves. If necessary, one five
minute overtime will be held, and then a tie is a tie.
Associate Student Federation (ASF) Forum is sponsoring this activity,
and prizes will be awarded to the winning team.
Other activities for the Spring semester include, a shooting contest
on Feb. 10 during the women's basketball halftime. In mid-March Intramural
basketball and a softball tournament will start.
