CSU San Bernardino's Coyote Den was the site of the University of La
Verne men's volleyball match on Saturday, as the Leopards invaded the opposition's
territory to win in three straight games, 15-6, 17-15, 15-9.
During the first and third games, the Leopards were able to minimize
their serving errors, but the second game was a different story.
The errors made during the second game by La Verne gave San Bernardino
more opportunities to score than they should have had, keeping them in the
game.
"We did our best. We were obviously a better team. We didn't play
down to them, we played our game. A couple of times they got up on us but
then we buckled down and beat them," said senior setter Morgan Coberly.
ULV had five of its players reach double digits for kills. Junior Jason
Flick led the way with 20, junior Chris Peterson followed with 18, freshman
Alex Lienert had 12, senior Joel Harworth had 11 and senior Ryan Allen finished
the match with 10.
The team played well and scored fast due to the fact that its passing
allowed the middle-hitters to set well.
"We discussed what it was we wanted to do and then we went out
and did it," said freshman middle-hitter Alex Lienert.
"San Bernardino was a big match for us because they are a Division
II school and it is important for our Division III ranking, " said
senior opposite-hitter Ryan Allen of La Verne's No. 2 national ranking in
Division III.
"We had to beat UC San Diego because they beat San Bernardino,
so in turn we had to beat San Bernardino to continue to study ahead of San
Diego," said Allen.
The Leopards play against Pacific Christian tonight at 7:30.
