Chatting over ice cream in the Student Center while watching wrestling
on the television, sophomore Sigma Kappa members Allison Evans and Angela
Mlinarevic talk with senior Iota Delta member Par Nag and senior Wendy Lau
of Phi Sigma Sigma. The social, held Monday evening, attracted about 15
women and was one of several events held during National Panhellenic Week.
This was the inaugural week designed to bring ULV's sororities closer together.
National Panhellenic Council (NPC), the governing body for the University
of La Verne sororities, held its first-ever NPC week beginning Monday and
concluding today.
The primary purpose of the event was to create inter-sorority cousins
as a bonding method between the three sororities.
College Panhellenic Association (CPA) is the local governing body for
ULV sororities which recently implemented the cousins program.
Par Nag, president of CPA and senior Iota Delta member, said that this
event will make relations much better.
She said, "There are 90 women in La Verne's Greek system. Not everyone
knows one another. Now, through the cousins program, the sisters will have
the opportunity of meeting people outside of their own sororities."
Angela Mlinarevic, social chair for CPA and sophomore Sigma Kappa member,
said that there had been tension among the sororities a few years ago. She
said, "I feel the tension is now resigning and this event will bring
on better feelings."
With Rush Week right around the corner, Tanya Taylor, a senior Phi Sigma
Sigma member and also a member of the NPC committee said, "I think
that NPC week will promote 'good vibes,' further the Greek system as a whole,
and show that no matter what sorority you are in we are all friends."
Cousins were randomly assigned by the CPA secretary Sunday, before NPC
week began. An ice cream social started the events on Monday, followed by
Laser Tag Tuesday, and concludes with a barbecue and Cousin Olympics today.
