ASF Forum elects new members

The Associated Student Federation (ASF) Forum has filled its open positions
and is ready to go fully staffed into the spring semester following special
elections held Feb. 11.
University of La Verne students applied for a position they were interested
in holding and then had to go through an interview process just as though
it was a real job in the real work force. ASF held a discussion time for
each candidate and then voted on who they thought would best represent the
Forum.
Although six people applied for the three open positions, only four
were actually eligible due to the 2.5 grade point average requirement.
Freshman Mario Guerrero filled one of the two open general Forum positions.
Guerrero said of what he hopes to contribute to the Forum, "I don't
want to come in here (ASF) with plans to change the world. I'm just here
to try and do something for ULV."
"The Forum made good decisions," said Dan Lougheed, ASF president.
"We had really qualified candidates."
The members are expected to help address the concerns of La Verne students
and help organize student activities, on and off the campus.
The second general Forum position went to sophomore Valancy Rasmussen
and the third position, went to Jesus Borges, a transfer student representative
from Los Angeles City College.
"The goals for myself are to get in touch with most of the transfers
on this campus," said Borges. "The transition from one school
to another can be lonely."
For his own personal goal, Borges would like to develop more of his
leadership skills through ASF.
"I think with the people we have they will be able to hold their
own," said Lougheed.
Usually ASF elections are held only in the spring semester and the candidates
fulfill their position for the entire school year with a $250 LEAD scholarship.
Last semester some of the Forum members were not holding up their responsibilities
for the position that they held and were forced to resign from their positions.
Special elections were held this month because two other Forum members,
junior Angelica Martinez and sophomore Jessica Tejeda, resigned late in
the semester.
The new Forum members are obliged to receive half of the usual scholarship
amount, which is a total of $125 toward their tuition.
"Since we are starting a new semester they are fortunate to adjust
to everything," said Lougheed.
